Top 5 health benefits of Raw Honey

Benefits of Raw Honey

Raw honey is one of nature’s most underrated superfoods gathered by one of the most profound creatures on planet earth. Unpasteurised raw honey has been used throughout the centuries as a food source as well as a medicinal remedy.

Raw honey comes straight from the beehive and is considered raw as the food is not processed or pasteurised after extraction. It is a natural sweetener that still retains all the nutrients, enzymes and medicinal compounds that honey is known for. Honey is this state is a living food, high in anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral properties.

Many of the commercial honey products found in mainstream grocery stores are ultra-filtered and pasteurised which removes most of the nutrient-rich elements and kills all beneficial microorganisms and other health-enhancing components. This process removes and prevents crystallisation, destroys pollen and thus extends the shelf life of honey.

Raw honey thus is much more superior and beneficial than your regular honey. Here are the top 5 health benefits of using raw honey:

Raw Honey Benefits

  1. Raw honey is rich in antioxidants:

Raw honey contains a range of compounds that act as antioxidants, including phytochemicals, flavonoids, and ascorbic acid. Antioxidants are known to prevent or delay some types of cell damage.

Antioxidants also help to protect your body from cell damage due to free radicals–a substance that contributes to the ageing process and development of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Research shows that antioxidant compounds in raw honey called polyphenols may play a role in preventing heart disease.

  1. Soothe a sore throat:

Dealing with sore throat and coughs? Honey has been used as a remedy for sore throat for centuries. Several modern-day medical studies suggest raw honey is as effective (or maybe more) than some over-the-counter medicines to soothe a sore throat.

In fact, especially for young children (not babies) suffering from night-time coughs, a spoonful of raw honey is much better than medicines. It helps in reducing both the frequency and severity of nighttime coughs.

  1. Raw honey provides nutrition and energy:

When honey is left in its purest raw form, it’s truly a superfood rich with vital nutrients we need. Raw honey contains vitamin c and minerals like niacin, riboflavin, calcium, magnesium, potassium and zinc to name a few.

Have a big-sporting event like a marathon ahead? Ditch your sports gel and keep raw honey instead. Raw honey contains natural carbohydrate sugars like fructose and glucose which provides a boost of energy when ingested. Additionally, it is an effective natural enhancing supplement, increasing healing speed and facilitating natural recovery. This combined it with other vital nutrients present in raw honey, makes it the perfect athlete food.

  1. Healing of wounds:

Smearing honey on wounds has been an ancient practice but does it add value in modern life? A study conducted on 108 patients (14–68 years of age), with first and second-degree burns of less than 50% of the total body surface area proves so.

Fifty-one patients were treated with honey dressings and 57 with SSD (silver sulfadiazine). The average duration of healing was 18.16 and 32.68 days for the honey and SSD group.

Evidence suggests that raw honey is rich in antiviral and antifungal properties which helps in promoting healing of wounds.

  1. Raw honey is an antibacterial and antimicrobial agent:

Raw honey is a natural antibacterial and antimicrobial agent. The healing property of honey is due to the fact that it offers antibacterial activity thanks to the presence of immunomodulatory property necessary for wound repair among other things. Antimicrobial agents like raw honey can help in reducing the global burden of infectious diseases.
